    "It was my step-mother that sent me", said James in reply.
    "Well," said the leipreachaun, "Your step-mother must be very cruel to sent you out in such frost and snow without even shoes on your feet. Have you no boots of your own James?" asked he. "My father bought shoes for me". answered James "but my step-mother took them from me and wore them herself every day in order to save her own for Sunday."
    "I see", said the leipreachaun, looking very grave. "When you are returning home call here and I will have a nice pair of shoes and socks ready for you".
    The boy thanked the leipreachaun very much and was very pleased to know that he had found at least one friend in the world. When he reached his journey's end he delivered his message and returned to the 'forth' as quickly as he could to find the leipreachaun putting the finishing
