- (continued from previous page)other kind of fire material that they could get. On the houses in the country there used to be a half door to keep the pigs and fowl out of the kitchen. Dips and candles and rushlights were used for giving light.
- Long ago the houses were made from mud which was clay and water mixed.
Some houses were thatched, others galvanised and still others had felt for a roof.
The thatch was got from the stalk of oats or wheat grown locally. The galvanise was got in a hardware shop.
In the old houses there was a settle-bed in the kitchen. During the day it was beside a wall and at night it was pulled out in the middle of the floor. These settle-beds are still to be seen in many places.
