A pound note used to be called a quid, a shilling was called a bob, a tanner was the name given to a sixpence. A three penny piece was called a bird's eye and sometimes a bull. A penny was called a wing. Long ago a four penny piece and a ten penny piece were in use. A double florin and a guinea used to be used also. - The people had to go to the nearest towns to buy goods.
Buying and selling were carried on after mass. Groceries and drink, tobacco and matches were sold. This is not carried on still.
Money was not always given for goods. Anybody would get a stone of meal for a stone of oats.
