    almost a clown's hat in appearance and also finished narrow with a knot on top. The under garment was put on first without any delay. The taut strands of the straw reached to the person's knees. The cape was looped on then and it covered down over the band of the lower garment. The helmet was placed on then and it covered head and face completely.
    Nothing looked more beautiful in day or night that men dressed in this form. When proceeding to the house where the festival was carried on they go into a kind of formation. They usually carried sticks and as they came near the house "Diarmuid" went in advance carrying Grainne on his back. Nearly on all occasions some of the strawboys were musicians and carried their instruments with them. Diarmuid advanced to the door, tapped the door with a stick and asked help for his mother and family. The crowd in the house flocked out to the doorway. The bride-groom and bride appeared on the scene. He ordered the best man to distribute some drink among the strawboys. Often times a jar of whiskey was forthcoming and every man got his "crúisgín". Then the strawboys called on the bride for a dance and if she performed on the light fantastic she came outside and the
