  1. Scutching Flax Long ago
Long ago the scutching handles and wooden stocks were useful. Bogs were very plentyfull in those days there was alot of turf in the country in those days. The people used to dry the flax on kilns. Every man made a kiln of his own. It was composed of iron. They spread the flax across the iron bars and under neath they had a fire of turf and when that would be dry the would beat it and bring it to a barn were the women scutch it, when the job would be finished it would be brought to the market and sold at 10/= per st
Old Mrs Fidgeon was supposed to be one of scutchers in those days. The women did most of the work. They were paid 8 d per day. When the work was finished they brought to Belfast to the factory and get made into all kinds of nice materials. Some of the people kept it at home for themselves. The would finish about 8 oclock in the evening. Pat Lynch's father was one of the sellers.
This was told to me by Pat Lynch of Shercock Co Cavan.
