The day after Christmas is called Boxing Day or St. Stephens Day. It is as well as Christmas Day are bank holidays. People who have been working hard in the shops can spend these days in rest or fun. It is on this day that boys dress up and go from house to house burying the wren. They dance and sing and say this rhyme.
The wren the wren the king of all birds
On St. Stephens Day she was caught in the furze
The birds so small her family great
Rise up old woman and give us a threat
Up with the kettle and down with the pan
A penny or two pence to bury the wren
If you do not give them something they bury the wren at your door and this is supposed to bring bad luck for a year.
