    for holding the iron in and the hammer is for driving the nails into the shoes. The punch is for making holes & the rasp is for taking the sharp point off nails when they are driven into the animal's hoof. The knife is for pearing the animal's hoof and the sledge is for making the horse shoe.
    The forge was situated in a meadow owned by Willie Vogan. The end was towards the road. It was near no stream but he always had a tub of water at the door in which the red hot iron was cooled.
    Long ago the smith was the most honoured man of the district. The people of the district looked to the blacksmith as one next to the king. The blacksmith of this district two hundred years often entertained the great chieftains of Cavan.
