It is said that this particular road was the one traversed by Red Hugh O Neill on his march through Ulster. Another very ancient spot and one that was used as a Mass path in penal days is known as the Ballybrockley steps. Large slabs of stone so high that the flood rarely crosses them make a path across the river. people going to Drung Mass still use this path as a near way.
