    and a roost for them at night to roost on. They are fed three times a day with meal, bran and potatoes. We call them "chuck, chuck."
    When my mother wants to set a hen she buys a setting of eggs from a neighbour. Next she puts them into a box and puts a clocher on them. In about a week she tests the eggs to find if there are birds in them She holds a lighted candle behind the egg and if it clear there is no bird in it. If it is dark in the middle there is a bird in it. If she is not certain about the eggs she marks them with a purple pencil. In cold weather she sets them in a corner in the
