    There was a few hedge-schools in our district.

    school at the age of nine years. They used to learn English, Geography, Arithmetic and a few other subjects except Irish. They had no pens or pencils at that time. So they used to write on a slate. Every child had to bring a stool to sit upon in school and a bundle of sticks also They would have satchels made out of old bags also they buy a book that would do the whole family The teachers name was Mr John Thompson of Elphin This school was under a hedge beside the Shannon and it was called the Shannon School This school was started in 1913 There was a school in Newtowncashel and it was buried last year So all the children had to go to school in a barn. There was a school under a hedge in Rath... and there were 100 children going to it
