built on the Yellow River - Said to be used as a ford by travellers on their way to Tara.Hill of Ward (Telac[h]ta) about two miles N.E. of present town -Was an Ancient walled town - Remains of walls - about ten feet of thick circular wall still remains at bottom of garden of hotel. Said to have been the boundary town of Ancient Pale. -Old Norman Church - (Carmelite) in Cemetery also effigy of Norman Knight -Many old stones & crosses there.Connaught St. - Said to derive its name form the people who were fleeing form Cromwell's soldiers after siege of Drogheda - passing through Athboy on their way "to Connacht or Hell"Just . S. of the present town boundaries - there are many Ancient ramparts - on which Cromwell is said to have placed his cannon in position -
