- The farm animals are: Cows, calves, sheep, lambs, and horses. The most common words used when driving cows are" "Hea hup, "Come Up," and "Get On." Calves are called "Suck, Suck, Suck."
The cow house is called the Byre. the cows are tied with chains put around their necks. The chains are not made locally. Long ago when cows were being milked they were tied by the legs to prevent them from kicking.
A horse shoe or green branch is hung in the Byre to brting luck to the stock.
The horse is the most useful of our farm animals. He is kept in a shed which is called the stable. There is a manger for hay in the stall. He eats hay, oats, and turnips. The horse is shod by the blacksmith. He could not work if he hand not good shoes, so it is necessary to keep him properly shod. His hair(continues on next page)- Collector
