- (continued from previous page)made of oaten meal and water and baked on a griddle. Boxty bread was also eathen. It was made of mashed potatoes mixed with a little flour and water and baked in an oven.
Meat was not eaten often. Salt meat or bacon was generally eaten. They never ate fresh meat at all. Fish was eaten on days of abstinence. Herrings, ling, and hake were the fish eaten. Vegetables were eaten such as potatoes, turnips and cabbage. Nettles and dandelion were eaten in the Springtime. Wild sorrel and watercress was also eaten.
Food was eaten late at night about nine o'clock.
Certain kinds of food were eaten on certain occiasions such as on Easter Sunday, and on weddings.
Tea was first used in this district about fifty or sixty years ago. Noggins were used before cups were envented. They were like wooden mugs. On Easter Sunday everyone used to eat as many eggs as they could. This custom is dying out.- Collector
