- Long ago the old schools were called hedgeschools. They were held in houses and in barns. They were not strangers. If there were any educated persons in the district they would appoint him teacher. They had no salary from the government but the people would pay them something. They would stay a week in every house. They used teach Irish but everyone could speak Irish that time. They had no desks or seats. They used sit on stools and chairs.
