- Buying and selling is carried on in some shops in Cootehill on Sunday especially in public houses. Small shops out in the country always do business on Sunday.
In some shops things are given 'on tick'' 'on trust' or 'on strep'.
There is no noted unlucky day for business. Fairs and markets are held on Friday. There used to be a pork market every Wednesday but it was stopped 2 yrs ago. Now the live pigs are bought and sent to Cavan or Monaghan. Half-day here is Tuesday.
In Summer men will work on farms in exchange for goods. When trees are to be cut down men who cut them are often paid with the loppings or branches. One farmer who was fond of drink and had a lot of potatoes used to bring in potatoes to the public house to pay for his porter. Feathers and eggs as well as butter are often exchanged for goods.

Pedlers come round selling baskets ribbon and lace. On market and fair days a fish man goes round shouting "Fresh Fish"! "Fish Alive O"!(continues on next page)
