- A great number of the old houses are similar in build. They have a kitchen with a room on either end. The outer door opens directly into the kitchen, without any shade or jamb wall. The floors were earthen . The fireplaces were large open spaces with a brace. Niches were often left in the walls to do duty for shelves. Most of the mud wall cabins are gone. The walls in one room of Lady Caolans of Enagh Bailieboro are mud walls. on the out side they resemble the rest of the house, but the inside – before being whitewashed were rough and crumbly.
