  1. On a Summer's evening the air was cheering,
    The lambs were bleating and the fields were green,
    Some bells were tolling, o'er the Shannon rolling,
    And I was strolling round Sweet Parteen!
    What a pleasing duty, without gratuity,
    If I were able to describe the scene,
    In the beauteous landscape that Sarsfield trod on,
    With his gallant army and their jackets green.
    I would praise the people upright and decent,
    And give a special praise to each bright Colleen;
    The bells were tolling, and the Shannon rolling,
    and the lambs were bleeding in the fields so green.
    I would praise the churches, hotels and school house,
    And the grand old spot by the Shannon streams;
    Where you dear relations for ever lie sleeping
    In the silent grave-yard of Sweet Parteen.
    I would praise the meadows well fledged with fodder,
    The spacious gardens well tilled and clean;
    The trade and labour, and every neighbor
    That brought such blessing in Sweet Parteen.
