"The Hedge Schools"
In Knockatuna there lived an old hedge school master named Thomas Sullivan.Some of his pupils are alive yet.He taught the Spelling Book in his own cabin.He never taught in the open air.Sometimes he taught in the farmer's houses around.He taught in Peter Falvey's house Darragh.The pupils paid him 2d a week .His school benches consisted of planks resting on chairs or stones or blocks of wood.The pupils copied headlines in English ,little Irish was spoken .The pupils used the table at which he sat to do their writing .He was nick named Tom Quilty.
When the first National school was built in Kilmaley his school failed and he became sexton of the church.
