by beating it against a large flat stone raised upon two smaller ones.The sheaf was laid aside for thatching ,while that which had been knocked off by beating was called "spros".The thatcher then came ,and picked scallops of hazel and having pointed some began to work.A thatcher was considered good if he got eight strokes"covered in a house ,the gable end of which was fifteen feet in height. Linen spinning and weaving was carried on in my district to a great extent.Everyone used to grow a square of flax.The flax used to be sown in May and pulled in September.It should be pulled green or else it would of no use.
Then after pulling it, it was put into a hole called a flax hole .There is one in a bog near my house.The flax would be left there until it would be rotten.it would be yellow then.(continues on next page)- Collector
