- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)buyers did not get a luck penny, they hair would fall off the beasts. The custom was to buy the horses at the fair and give the halter to the buyer, and it is said if he did get it the horse would run away.
The luck-penny generally given with cattle was two shillings, and with a horse a half crown. This varied with the price of the beast. That fair is not held in Meelick now, it is held in the city of Limerick, and sixpence a head is to be paid on each beast. This toll was never paid at the fair of Meelick. - The farmers of Coonagh take their cattle to Limerick fairs and auctions.
The fairs are held once a month and auctions twice a week. In olden times there were only two fairs held in the year, in May and October. The place where the fairs were held is called the Fair Green. The morning of the fair the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
