Clonmoney House, situated not far from the river Shannon, midway between Limerick leity and Ennis was once the home of a famous sporting family called Canney. Their holding at one time comprised all the land from Kelly's Hill to Smithstown, amounting to about 1200 acres, with two large residences.
The Canneys were wonderful horsemen and their training-ground was a high hill of about 30 acres beside the lordly Shannon. As a matter of fact the name of one of them is commemorated on the famous racecourse at Tubbernaght near Scariff in east Claire. Mention of this fact will occur later.
They were Catholics, and entertained lavishly as was the wont in those days but very often the excess of drink led to many indiscretions, and this brings(continues on next page)- Informant
