- (continued from previous page)and some of the clever boys in the district thought they would play a joke on him. They laid him a bet that he would not carry on his back from Bunratty to his house on the Shill Road a cock of straw. Now this hill is a rather stiff climb without any lord. In the meantime the boys had concealed in the straw a stone gate-pier, and when Mathghamhain found he had such difficulty with his load of straw as he thought, although he succeeded in accomplishing the feat he thought he was growing weak and was therefore near his end. He took to his bed, and remained there until he was later convinced that it was a joke that was played on him.
