- Whilst the Railway line between Limerick and Ennis was being made gold ornaments were found in Mooghaun. The Railway line was to run through a bog and whilst excavations were taking place the workmen came upon a hidden treasure of gold ornaments very much tarnished. Some of the ornaments were tossed into the adjoining lake as the workmen were unaware of what they had discovered. They thought they were portions of worthless tin.
Some of the men more canny than the others, stored some of the treasures in their pockets to show to their friends when work was over for the day. Whilst these were being shown in Newmarket Village Mr Halpin an intelligent gentleman of the parish of Newmarket became interested in them and got the workmen to part with them for a sum of money. Mr Halpin had them forwarded to the National Museum where they can now be seen.(continues on next page)
