- When people required starch in olden times to stiffen table cloths and mens shirts they took some raw potatoes, washed them, stripped their jackets and then scraped them into a pulp. This pulp was squeezed and the water was placed in a bowl and left to set for a whole night. In the morning the water was drained off and the pure white starch remained on the bottom of the bowl and was used in the ordinary way.
