- There is only one forge in the parish of Aughagower. It belongs to Michael Staunton of Cordarragh. Paddy Staunton is the blacksmith now and his father was a blacksmith before him. It is a very old forge. The forge is beside the road and there is a river running beside it. There is a thatched roof on it. The shape of the door is round There are two fireplaces in it. It is a hand bellows worked by a long stick. The smith uses a sledge a hammer a pinchers a punch. He shoes horses and asses. He makes ploughs harrows and gates. He shoes wheels in the open air.
