- Candles were made in this locality, from rushes, before people began using paraffin lamps, and paraffin - wax candles, about sixty years ago.
Small rushes were cut in the bogs and brought home. They were peeled but a narrow strip of the skin was left on each rush so that it would be strong enough to stand erect. There some sheep's tallow was melted in a grisset and the peeled rushes were steeped in the melted tallow. They were left in the tallow until there were throughly(continues on next page)- Collector
