   Lindsey Fitzpatrick of Hollymount House, Co. Mayo had large estates in Kilmaine Parish. The Land Commission purchased his estates in the property, ad the lands divided, houses built and tenants installed. Frenchbreook was grazing ranch of 600 acres (Irish). Another 300 acres were divided in the townland of Thomastoron. Fitzpatrick had demesne and other lands in the vicinity of Hollymount. These lands and the landlord's mansion were acquired by the J.L.C. The mansion and come of hte demense lands were repurchased by Mr McCarton the present occupier.

   This landlord was a sporting gentleman. His game rights were well protected in Frenchbrook and the place was notorious for pheasants which had the best of cover in the scrub which grew there. He kept a pack of hounds and hunted for a considerable time over South Mayo where many a red fox was run to earth. He also kept racing horses one of which won the Galway Plate. His niece was married to the Duke of Westminister, and two other nieces to German princes. As a patron of sport and the stage he was very popular. He was instrumental in directing Mr Walter McNally's career as a singer.

   The next largest ranch in this parish Kilmaine) belonged to Miller of Milford. It comprised about 200 Irish acres in the townlands of Rathgranagher and Milford.
