- The famine started in the year 1846. It ended up in the year 1849. The stalks got blighted and the people had not a potato to eat. At that time a great many more people were living in Ireland than there are living now. The people were stronger and healthier then than the people are now. The people died from hunger and cold but most of all from a disease that followed the famine. They died on the roadside in the fields and under hedges. They used to eat grass and weeds to keep them living. All through the day and night carts were going to the graveyards with corpses. The people dug pits to bury the corpses in them. Five or six corpses used to be buried in one grave. The small children used to eat turnips grass and nettles. At that time the people used live on potatoes and(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
