    sell her for the cost. He sold her and gave the money to Balf just enough to take him to London. He went in search of work but was a long time before he found it. He passed through a street where there were many offices. He, passed (through) saw one in particular where eight clerks laboured. It belonged to a great gentleman and when Balf came he looked in the window and saw the head-clerk was at a sum and could not do it.
    He did the same for three days but on the second evening the clerk saw him and said if he came the next evening he'd arrest him. Balf came and a policeman was going to arrest but he said he saw the clerk for two days. The gentlman asked if he could do it and he said "yes". He did the sum in a short time.
