He told her to hold on to the raft till he reached her, which he did in about ten minutes. He then set out for a life boat he had seen in the distance. After a hard struggle the life boat was reached. It was found to be overturned and had about thirty persons sitting on its sides. They stubbornly refused to take another passenger as they feared being overturned. My mothers rescuer persisted saying "For God's sake do not leave the only living woman victim". And so this Englishman, returning from America to fight for his native country was instrumental in saving my mother's life by getting her on to that life boat after twelve hours floating in angry waters. My mother's earnest pleadings gained admittance for him in turn. They all came safely to Queenstown at 2am next morning where for two days they were under doctors' care. All were supplied with sufficient clothing in which to travel home.
