  1. St Kieran's father was of Kingly blood in Co. Meath and getting into trouble there he fled to Donegal and from that to Mayo where he finally settled.
    When young Kierane grew up he decided to become a priest but his father opposed the idea strenuously until he saw that Kierane had finally decided to join some order. He gave him his way and on the morning Ciaran set out. His father said "My boy all I have to give you is one cow, you can have her because it is better to have one cow with God's Grace than fifty with the devil's luck"
    When he reached the monastery he was well received there.
    Before he died he prayed for the poor farmer- the farmer with one cow- the farmer whose cattle were dying or whose crops failed.
    The fact becoming known people came to the place where Kierane was born taking with them - butter, milk, cows horns and throwing them into the lough saying -Kieran's father gave the only cow he had to
