    When the people went to the fair long ago they used to sell whatever they had. If they (had) were not satisfied with the price they got they would sell the beast again the first buyer could not do anything to them for it because he had not paid for the beast, but the buyer used to give the seller a few shillings then the seller had not permission to do anything with the beast. The money that was given was called earnest.
