  1. With the coming of Penel Laws, they above [sic] “turned” to save their lands. – John Browne grandson of Colonel J. Brown became M.P. 1743-1760.
The famous Sean-na-Sagart then started on his priest hunting. Sean’s real name was Moloney. He was a […] of the Brownes & of landlords in general.
The present “Castle” in the Westport Demesne is a massive rectangular structure- commanding a fine view of the “Reek.” Near it is the old fort or Cathair na Mart. 1771. John Browne was created Earl of Altamont. (Name of a street in Westport now). After the “Union” the title Marquess of Sligo was conferred [?].
John Browne 1st Earl of Altamont built Westport. Presbyterian weavers were introduced from the North. The following were among the first families- O’Malley, O’Ferguson [?], Burke, Staunton [?], Gibbons, Murrays, Tierneys [?], Gorman, Geraghtys, Heratys. The present demesne is all “reclaimed land.”
In 1798. Westport was but slightly affected. When Humbert chased the English out of Castlebar a small detachment of French chased some of the Yeomen to withen a short distance of Westport.
From the “Union” to 1840, Westport was fairly prosperous, it was during this period that the immense stores now lying idle along the Quay were built.
