   In the beautiful poem by Aubrey de Vere on St. Patrick and St. Benignus the following lines occur:

   "Like some still vision men see by night,
   Mitred, with eyes of serene command,
   St. Patrick moved onward in ghostly white,
   The staff of Jesus was in his hand
   His priests paced after him unafraid.
   And the boy, Benignus, more like a maid,
   Like a maid just wedded he walked and smiled,
   To Christ now plighted that priestly child."

   On the death of St. Patrick, St. Benignus succeeded him int he See of Armagh. The remains of an ancient church and a holy well at this historic spot near Gormanstown Strand, and Ben Head, overlooking the sea, are reminders of St. Benen's association with the locality.
