They put the table in the centre of the floor and put the pot on the table with a large spoon in it and every body filled his noggin with porridge. (A noggin was a big wooden mug which they used instead of cups)
When they were finished the table was fastened against the wall out of the way. There was two hooks in the wall to hold it. They always made the bread in the griddle it was called "Griddle Cake." They also used Indian meal for making porridge. Their pans were not like our pans. The old pans had two ears and hangers over the fire.
In some country districts certain days were set apart for certain food to be eaten. In one particular district I know Thursday and Friday was called bacon and cabbage day. The people were very strong and robust in those days, due to the plain strong food. It was remarkable how sound teeth were in those years which I think can be accounted for in the food, which had not so much chemicals in it as at present.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
