- Long ago match-making was common in Ireland. The man who wished to get married and another man, known as the match-maker, would take a bottle of whiskey with them to the house where a suitable girl lived. The match-maker would ask the girl's father to consent to the wedding, and if he did, the whiskey would be put round. The father would then ask the man how much land and money he had, and there and then the marriage would be arranged.
In those days the couple could get married at any time of the day up till eleven o'clock at night. On the morning of the wedding the bride would go one road to the Chapel with her people, and the bridegroom would take another road.
