America heard of the sufferings of the poor Irish. They began to collect money on their behalf and they sent it home to the English Government. They started relief schemes. At that time they erected piers and made roads and did many other useful things.
In the year eighteen forty seven they erected a pier at Mount-Charles. They also made a road from Frosses to Mountcharles. To this day carts use this road and people often say it is a short cut from Frosses to Mountcharles.
The government also sent out (porridge) "relief meal". This meal was distributed in the Donegal Workhouse. At first the people were ashamed to go for this meal. They would rise in the night and go to Donegal for it.
Soon afterwards a pot was erected at the Roose Bridge. Porridge was made in this pot.
