- Our cow house is built of stone and mortar. It is under the barnloft and it is white-washed inside and outside.There are eight stands in it. There are four cows tied on one side and five calves on the other side. There is a big long plank about 5 feet from side to side. The stakes are put down through holes in this plank. The chain is put on to the stake by a turn sweel.A turn-sweel is two iron rings one around the stake, the other joining the chain to this ring.(continues on next page)
