appeared at the Castle unexpectedly in Sir Samuels absence and the hospitable lady of the house refused to admit him. Turned away from his brother's door, the younger gentleman was leaving the grounds when he met Monsignor McMenamin, the parish priest. Apparently they had at least seen each other already that day, probably just before Hayes had gone up to the Castle, because Mons. McMenamin now remarked that W? Edmund had not stopped long up at the house. Edmund remarked that he had not, because his brother happening to be away from home, his sister-in-law had refused him admission, on the grounds that she had no room for him. He added that he would now have to go to the hotel but would clear out next day. Mons. McMenamin at once invited him to spend the night as his guest in the Parochial House. The invitation was gratefully accepted, and during the course of the evenings conversation Hayes learned from a chance remark of his host that the priest wanted the remainder of the field on portion of which his church was built but thaat Sir Samuel refused.
