- Famine Times
The Famine that occured in 1846-7 did a great deal of harm in my district. The potatoes failed and some people sold their farms, and then went to other countries. Some people made fires behind the hedges and made porridge there, and it was said that is was the first time for Indian meal to come to Ireland. All the people gathered for the porridge. This porridge was called Relief Porridge.
During the Famine the people had even to eat the skins of potatoes that they had thrown out before, because they were so hungry. My grandfather's father and another man went out to gather the potatoes early in the morning and they had not as many potatoes as would have satisfied four persons at dinner time.
