    Sabbath rites to share.
    We knelt and prayed with thoughts on fire, and eyes that filled with tears,
    That pitying Heaven would kindly stay those scenes in coming years.
    And one there was of braver mien among that fettered band,
    I marked the flash that lit his eye, the smile of import grand.
    From noble line of ancient blood has sprung that soul of fire,
    Mac Sweeney of the battle-axe of that proud race was sire.
    They tell us to be patient, ah! we have been patient long,
    Through years of blighting famine we have lain beneath the wrong
    But, oh! 'tis hard for human hearts to still the thoughts of strife,
    When torn's the pastor from his flock, the husband from his wife.
    I longed to share the glory yet it is not woman's sphere,
    A gentler mission hers must be, a less renowned
