- Long ago there were a good many coopers in teh country. They made tubs, milk butts churns barrels piggins etc. The churns were made of oak which is a hard timber and lasts a long time.
The cooper used a hand-saw plane adze hammer punch and driver. He cut the staves the proper length and dressed them with the adze.
He cut a track round each stave with the croze-saw the bottom of the churn fitted in this track.Written by EMily Wrary
