Ar an leathanach seo
- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)great set times - as Christmas and Easter. The people had potatoes for breakfast, dinner and supper and they were strong and hardy. They would have thought nothing of walking to Derry while carrying a butt of butter strapped to their backs. The homeward Journey was made on foot, and perhaps a cut bag of yellow meal was carried home.
The cooking vessels were made of wood and metal was little used. The people then had no metal saucepans, pot, ovens and pans as are in use these times. They cooked the potatoes outside. They made a fire in the field or garden. They made what they called clabar by wetting the clay.
The potatoes were rolled in this clabar and a shell of it covered each one - These were then put in a fire of moderate size, and cooked. When ready, they were taken out of the fire and the outside shells and potato skins were taken off with the nails, and an enjoyable meal was made of the potatoes cooked in this way.- Bailitheoir
