- Jas Green, who is mentioned already in this book, composed the following poem also. The words were taken from "Michael Cavanagh of Ourt" and here and there are meaningless. To understand the poem it should be told that Green sat on "Bishop Hill" near his home one March evening when three young girls, probably knowing of his power of poetry, visited him and spent an hour with him. The girls were Violet and Grace - and a Miss H-r, a schoolteacher.
Give to me the pen of Great Homer
And Byron's intellect
And it's then I'll tell you of a flower
Burns did neglect.
I'm sure a simple violet blue
Must be a beautiful flower
That on a sunscorched hillside grew
Just but for an hour
Violets wet with April showers
Was always my delight
To speak of anything but flowers
Would sure be impolite
The passion's a beautiful flower
When really trained by a teacher's hand.
