- In olden times bread was made from Rye meal. Flour was not made locally. People remember of querns being used. Querns were two big stones which were used for grinding Rye. The things put in the cake were, soda, salt, and buttermilk. When they had no buttermilk water was used. Bread was baked every day.The sign of the cross was put on each cake.
