- The principal food long ago was, potatoes and stirabout. There was no such thing as tea or cocoa. The stirabout was made from Indian meal. Butchers meat was unknown. Bacon was the only meat used. All farmers and other people killed and cured their own bacon. I heard my Grannie say, that when she was young she carried stirabout out to the men in the fields when they were reaping.
