- Forgework
Forgework is done by a blacksmith a man who is an expert at converting iron into articles of use for mankind all over the world.
A forge contains a furnace into which the bars of iron are put. A bellows is attached to the fire and blows it until the iron is red hot. It is then taken out by the blacksmith with a special tongs. While still red-hot and soft it is beaten and bent into the shape required on an anvil. Of many things made of iron in a forge, shoes for horses are the principal ones and in every town and village in Ireland you will hear the ring of the blacksmith's hammer as he beats out the shoes for horses, and boys and girls going home from school stand and watch the blacksmith in the glow of the forge fire as he hammers the iron into shape.- Faisnéiseoir
