- Long ago the people hadn’t scythes
like they have now for cutting
the hay and oats or there was
no such things as culling machines
in the country. The people young
and used to be out in the
hayfield. They used to cut the hay
and oats with hooks and tie it
up then. They had not even a rake
at that time at al. They used to
gather up the loose bits of hay
and straw with their hands. It
used to take them a long time
to cut an acre of hay. When
they used to be bringing it home
they used to carry it on their
backs if it was not a very long
distance away. They used to have no
forks at that time either but a long
stick with a bit of iron at the
top nearly like a grape and they
used those for other purposes also. When
they would be thrashing the oats they
used to knock the grain out by(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
