  1. There was a hedge school in this district at the time of the Penal Laws, and sometimes they were called Domsgols. There was one of these schools held in Arda-hesgán in the townland of Ardascanlin. This was a place where there were three rocks, and the children sat on these rocks, and it was a man called James Roe that taught. James Roe was a native, and he always taught out in the open air. The way the teacher was paid everyone would pay a shilling every three months. Irish, writing, and reading was taught at these schools, and they wrote on slates.
