- There was once a man who was very fond of playing cards. One night as he was returning home after a night's playing he had to pass over a bridge. He met a man who said to him "What will you give me if every time you put your hand in your pat pocket you will find a shilling in it and can spend it?" I will give my soul. "Very well" said the man "be here in the same place tomorrow night". They both met the next night. The man said to the card player "Throw yourself into that river" "I cannot" said he. "Throw me in" "I will if you take off those things of your neck" "No I wear this in honour of the Blessed Virgin". The stranger went away in a flame of fire and was never seen again.Collected by Ellen Doherty
